HELP!

To take advantage of Conference weekend and having Dave home for two days, we've decided to toilet train Sophia. I'm petrified. The fear of having all the kids, being in the middle of checking out of the grocery store and her announcing, "I have to go potty"! I know she's ready, I'm just not sure that I'm ready. I don't mind going out with the three of them, but taking all three into a public bathroom is terrifying. I've read some books and tried to prepare both myself and Sophia, but I would love any tips experienced mothers can provide. Anything anyone can tell me to make going out easier, getting them to understand we aren't going back to diapers, rewards, anything! I'd love to hear what you have to say. Wish us luck!

Well, I guess I'll start things off: stay home for two days and put Sophia in big girl undies. Do not, under any circumstances, buy Pull-Ups. In my opinion, they feel like diapers and defeat the purpose of potty training. It takes patience and prodding to help her recognize when she has to go, but she'll get it. Then, before leaving the house, always make it a rule to go potty, but bring back up clothes just in case of an accident. Changing clothes is easier than trying to get 3 kids into the bathroom to save a bit of laundry!

I totally agree with the last comment. I would add that you should consider something other than candy for a reward system. We started off with candy, but candy before bed when the teeth are already brushed was not ideal. We now use stickers as a reward. We cut a bunch into a fancy bowl to choose from. This has worked much better. John gets to put them on a paper taped by his bed so that he is always reminded of it. Also I would syche her up to the big day; as in "on Friday you are going to wear big girl undies!!! Diapers are for babies, and you are not a baby anymore, what a big girl!" You get the point. Good luck! P.S. don't worry about the store/public thing. I'm sure you will always be surrounded by moms who have been through it!

It sounds ridiculous but we had a potty party. We filled Breanna up with juice during our party (it was a tea party with a potty in the room) and just played games and hung out with Makayla and her dolls. That way I could watch her for signs that she had to go. For Allison all it took was her getting herself wet once and she never wanted it to happen again so she would go potty. She was an angel about it.

Oh and by the way, good luck! It was a nightmare training Breanna because she is stubborn so don't get discouraged if other people have success and Sophia struggles. She will get it eventually.

One more thing...buy a Spot Bot and plenty of refills on the fluid!!

I also think you should reward yourself when she gets it, say with some more Cheesecake Factory?

Heather I am dying to know how it went. I'm sure it went just fine. How was "toilet training in less than a day?" Talk to you soon.
